What the flock! A glorious spiderweb pattern mingling with falling autumn leaves, an entirely flocked design over a glossy satin. Gothic and sweet, this 1950s oh-so-elegant shape features fold over lapels that create the rounded sweetheart bust line. Cross over faux closure in the bodice, pleated full skirt with an accordion hip detail. Closes with a side zipper so as to not disturb a single visible web.
Autumn Leaves an incredibly popular tube that was originally “Les Feuilles Mortes” (The Dead Leaves), composed in 1945 by Joseph Kosma, and lyrics by Jacques Prévert. The song was influenced by a piece of ballet music “Rendez-vous” written by Kosma for Roland Petit, which in turn was influenced by a Massenet piece called “Poème d’octobre” (1876). The English version was written by Johnny Mercer at Capitol Records in 1950, who titled it Autumn Leaves. My, how much influence and time it took to get to this completed state, that we now get to enjoy this beautiful piece of collaborated passions called “the most important non-American standard”.
On a side note…it must be mentioned that the ballet Rendez-vous from 1945 was designed from top to bottom by some of the biggest creatives in history, hence why the song born from it is such a timeless piece. Le Rendez-vous was based on a poem by Jacques Prévert, who wrote the original French lyrics to the above Autumn Leaves song. Pablo Picasso did the stage curtains, scenery was by Brassaï, costumes by artist Mayo, Roland Petit as the choreographer, and Joseph Kosma as the composer. You can watch a preview of the ballet here.
The movements, the look, the sound…we have a hard time getting over its every detail.
