When the French poet Charles Baudelaire wrote his most famous volume, Les Fluers du Mal, Mario Labottecca would have likely been his idea of the perfect artist to illustrate his work. Although the two would never meet, with decades of time keeping them apart, they come together in this highly imaginative collection of art. Dealing with unusual and scandalous themes at the time (sex, death, and forbidden love) Baudelaire and his publisher were prosecuted for these works although many supporters stayed behind the author including many fellow notable artists such as Victor Hugo. The importance of passion for the sake of art, despite its consequences, winning out in the long run. Pushing the edge of our society and its constrictions a little further along, Baudelaire is regarded as one of our masters of poetry.
